Pneumology

What is it?

Medicine discipline that studies diseases that affect the respiratory system. The pneumology and respiratory therapy unit seeks to offer comprehensive care to patients with respiratory diseases or with suspected risk of lung disease. Formed by a multidisciplinary team that attends the areas of diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation.

Respiratory therapy

Pulmonary laboratory

  • Spirometry and volume flow curve.
  • Plethysmographic measurement of lung volumes.
  • MIP and MEP measurement.
  • Airway resistance measurement.
  • CO diffusion.
  • 6-minute walk test, exercise bronchoprovocation test and methacholine bronchoprovocation test.

Diagnostic bronchoscopy

Bronchial and bronchoalveolar lavage (cytology, flow cytometry, microbiology and molecular biology), bronchial brushing, bronchial and transbronchial biopsies, transtracheal, transcarinal and Transbronchial needle  aspiration biopsy (TNA).

Therapeutic bronchoscopy

Extraction of foreign bodies in the airway, treatment for bronchial and tracheal stenosis with pneumatic dilation, placement of self-expanding or silicone stents, resection or reduction of expansive lesions in the airway with Argon Plasma, endobronchial brachytherapy.
